Universal of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki on usury

At the request of Crown Jews, King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki specifies the resolutions of the diet constitution of 1670 which forbids Crown Jews from granting loans against items on a percentage higher than 20%. This rule will not apply to loan agreements made under previous rules before passing the above legislation. In the case of loan agreements for items pledged for less than 100 zlotys or short term agreements (less than 3 months) pledged for amounts of several hundred or few thousand zlotys, Christian debtors should compensate Jewish usurers for their losses caused by earlier debt payment. After one year and six weeks, which is the time to pay the loan, Jews possessing pledged items are allowed to bring them to the sub-voivode to estimate their value and to sell afterwards.
